Fraction Tips
🔝 Top and Bottom
The numerator (top number) counts the filled parts — on these pies, the white slices. The denominator (bottom number) counts how many equal parts the whole thing is split into.
🍕 Bigger Bottom, Smaller Slice
The bigger the denominator, the smaller each slice is — 1/8 of a pizza is a much thinner slice than 1/2 of the same pizza.
🟰 Equivalent Fractions
Different fractions can mean the same amount, like 1/2 and 2/4 — that's why we can simplify a fraction down to its smallest form.
💯 A Whole Fraction
When the top and bottom numbers are the same, like 4/4, it means every part is filled — that's a whole one!
➕➖ Adding and Subtracting
If the bottom numbers already match, just add or subtract the tops: 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4. If they don't match, find a common bottom number first (multiply each fraction up until both denominators are the same), then add or subtract the tops: 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6
✖️ Multiplying
Multiply straight across — top times top, bottom times bottom. No need to match the bottoms first! 1/2 × 2/3 = 2/6 = 1/3
➗ Dividing
Flip the second fraction upside down (swap its top and bottom — that's called its reciprocal), then multiply instead of dividing: 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 4/2 = 2
